Too miuch money for too little payoff. IndigoBlueWagon said:. TheGrove said:. The ''05 is not a CR engine, it is a PD. You have to get to the ''13 years to be a CR Passat Make sure yo uget one that has had the work done and forget what C.
They rate a 03 Jetta Wagon diesel all black. It gets a terrible rating on C. If you have one for sale though it won't last a day. Last edited: May 20, Joined Jun 20, Location Sterling, Massachusetts. Oilhammer, I hear you on problems with transverse engine VWs, although, just as with the B5. I still have original rear axle bushings in my wagon: those and control arm bushings seem to fail, in part, because people let their dampers go to mush before replacing them.
But the issue with the B5. And how much do those upper control arms cost? I think the big thing when buying a used B5. It can be expensive. Once it's done you may have a pretty good car.
But you have to pay to play. I think even my B4 was less expensive to bring up to snuff. Worldpac has engine mounts, they are genuine Volkswagen but are a little bit less money They are actually quite inexpensive for genuine liquid-filled mounts.
Call a Honda dealer and ask them how much they get for the rear dynamic mount on a VCM-equipped Odyssey. And if you really want to, you can press out the inner bushing and replace just that. I don't care to do that, since it can be pretty stressful I think on the ball joint to get the arm out.
BHW camshafts are indeed unique, but, like the other two PD VAG 4 cylinders sold here, this is a non-issue with the proper oil as far as I am concerned. I know my valve cover won't be coming off any time soon. But thanks to dealers peddling 5w30 oil, I change plenty of other camshafts. Once changed, and the owners instructed about the proper stuff, no worries.
Heck, I have some people that have gone longer on the camshaft I installed than they did on the original one. Says a lot about that Pentosin HP2 5w40 oil. Good to know about the mounts. We haven't seen the diesel-specific mounts anywhere other than the dealer, but I'll look. You may get better pricing from Worldpac than us. Regarding camshafts, unfortunately when buying a used car you don't know what oil was in it. So you may be in for one cam replacement. We now have aftermarket cams, which weren't available to us, anyway until fairly recently.
You got yours reflashed by Jeff, and you live in a relatively mild climate. Others won't be as fortunate with steel plugs. It's not a big deal and the new ceramic plugs are cheap, it's just a bit of a pain to get sorted. But by now, that has all pretty much been sorted.
VOA extended the warranty on that, too, but of course many dealers will be clueless and it all too often results in a call to VW Customer Care to force them to honor what they should. That happens a lot, though, with just about anything. Funny thing is, when it was all said and done, you'd just had been better off to leave the original software in place, and just put the newer same-voltage NGK plugs in there.
That's what I've been doing successfully for over a year now, on people that simply won't go to a dealer for anything, even if there is a potential coverage at no cost. They just don't want to deal with the hassle. If the car hasn't been reflashed for 5v that is the best solution.
If it has, however, you have to get the dealer or a tuner to take it back to 7v or pay for the more expensive and less effective steel plugs. A very savvy, articulate, and helpful response. Joined Dec 25, Location Texas.. Actually, having owned two B5.
This is especially true my opinion if you can find a cherry package 1 or 2. Powder Hound Top Post Dawg. Michaelcurious said:. If you're not sick of me yet Thanks a million for all your well educated opinions on the Passat. It's great to be able to access such library of experience.
Sure enough, I recognize that a Passat TDI, though obviously well-engineered in almost all respects, probably isn't the car for me. Thanks for helping me come to terms with that. If y'all aren't sick of me yet, would you care to weigh in with what models, other than brand new ones, I should look for, and what ones maybe to avoid? Maybe I could afford 15k. This thread is giving me a headache. I step on throttle Please disregard my comments. My Passat wagon's problems have not given me a headache yet, although the alternator went last week. The car is a money pit. The alternator pulley is next, followed by the leaky motor mounts Joined Jun 20, Location Sterling, Massachusetts. I drove mine to St. Louis for the balance shaft replacement because, as of February when I did that, there wasn't anyone in this area with the level of expertise that I wanted.
There still aren't dealers in the area that I trust. The B5. Weird interior layout, ergonomics, locations of controls, inane rear hatch and fuel cap locks designed by a paranoid that apparently had no dealings whatsoever with those doing the locks for the doors.
And just to not leave out the others, the remainder was made deep blue on black for poor contrast even with good color perception. Now I'm wound up! Seats aren't as good as those in the B4. The much maligned afterthought cup holders of the B4 are superior to those ostensibly 'integrated' in the B5. The side mirrors are an odd ovoid shape that creates a small field of view to the sides. The manual mode of the Tiptronic is as useless as a thermostat that is selectable between automatic 68F or "manual" override from 67F to 69F.
In manual mode the transmission still shifts down long before necessary and it won't shift up on my command either until it's damn well good and ready.
Washer jets that break off when the wipers are shut off in a snow storm and they return to their park position. I will allow that it does have a glove box that the B4 didn't. Mine has been great, I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Original Michelins replaced with another set at 75k miles.
Still on original brakes. Scheduled by the book PM otherwise. I installed a W8 skidplate, gravel guards, nose bra, and proper headlight controls when the car was brand new.
I proactively upgraded the glow plugs and instead of having the recall reflash done I gave Rocketchip my money for the RC1 map and am enjoying the superior driveability, better power, and better fuel economy that it offers. The car is sturdy, built like a tank, comfortable, frugal, and nice looking in an understated timeless way not too flashy, which I like. My only complaints are: I wish it could have been purchased with a manual transmission I wish it had a few less bells and whistles mine is a fully-loaded GLS, but even the most 'basic' B5s are pretty dolled up to me I wish I had held out for a wagon my sedan's trunk is smaller than my '91 Jetta's!
I wish it could have been had with the Bose system like the Audis do instead of the mediocre Delphi Monsoon system Basically, it is like an Audi A4 with a longer wheelbase, more power, better fuel economy, for several thousand dollars less. Then you should first have a look at this article.
Here are some quick pros and cons to give you a quick overview of the Passat. The VW Passat houses many exciting features which makes it a premium 4 seater sedan, even if you are going to buy it second hand. Why is it so? Have a look at the reasons yourself. The front grille has the chrome finish with the VW logo at the middle which is also lined with chrome. The doors and handles have a chrome lining which looks versatile and bold. Comfort — the interiors of the VW Passat will surely impress you.
The cabin has Nappa leather upholstery which feels very premium and comfortable, certainly feeling as if they are from a more expensive car.
The full black-tone interior looks stunning.
