Barnosky and colleagues studied large animal extinctions that occurred between 50, and 10, years ago, an era called the late Pleistocene. These extinctions included animals such as mammoths and mastodons, the saber-toothed cat, ground sloths and native American horses and camels.

While many researchers have blamed humans for those extinctions, the team led by Barnosky, of the University of California, Berkeley, said humans and climate change share the blame. Climate change is occurring more rapidly today than in the late Pleistocene and growing human populations are taking over former large-animal habitats, Barnosky said.
