The original Sperry boat-shoe is indeed a classic. The question is, how do the off-brand shoes compare? However, the argument is quality, and this is where the price difference comes into play. The durability and overall quality of Sperry boat shoes does, admittedly, surpass that of Highland Creek. They are truly well-crafted, but you certainly pay for that.

They are not waterproof but occasionally getting them wet isn't a problem. I find they fit my feet even better after getting wet a few times. They are a functional shoe designed for walking on wet slippery boat decks without leaving marks. There are fake boat shoes that look like topsiders but lack the white rubbery sole and rugged construction of the original.

If you are wearing them just for show than the cheaper lookalikes should be fine. They are not waterproof. They're a part of our school uniform, and get wet very, very easily. It's very likely they're expensive right now because they ARE so popular. The more someone wants something, the more they're going to be willing to pay for it.
